Amidst a plethora of serviceable CD’s available for shamanic journey work, this noteworthy recording by Hearth of the Dancing Drum from Eugene, OR, displays a uniquely enchanting character. The CD begins with a small group of singers and drummers offering a sacred chant in unison, their voices lending a personal feel. Beginning quietly, even hesitantly, the resonant shamanic journey beats in each segment assume a solid and appropriate rhythm for eliciting a Shamanic State of Consciousness. The CD is usefully divided into three 10-minute segments, followed by a standard callback rhythm. In the second half of the CD, the shamanic drumming is accompanied by harmonious Native American Flutes in both a 10 and 20 minute cut. I found both orchestrations completely successful for strong shamanic journey work, and especially enjoyed the beautiful evocative flute accompaniment, which deepened the journey for me. The CD ends with a reprise of the first chant, and one more powerful chant with drumming. It is, of course, well-designed for inducing and maintaining a shamanic state of consciousness, and so probably best not played while driving, but I’d be sorely tempted to listen for pure pleasure to the second half, with the Native American flute and final chants. I applaud the Hearth of the Dancing Drum, all shamanic practitioner-musicians, for producing a technically proficient shamanic drumming CD that shimmers with character and powerful energy.
